Shuffle Up is a cardistry convention by Paperdecks. This year the event was hosted in London at Market Halls Oxford Street. Sponsored by Black Roses, Butterfly, odyssey & merlin mahbod.
This was a 1 day event where people made new friends and got the chance to show off their card skills to the community.
The event opened at 10am and the attendees got a goodie bag upon entering, after everyone had checked out their new cards and goodies, we started the talks and videos.
This year we had two great speakers: Chris Loo & Yev Moskalov.
Chris shared a presentation on how we can all make the cardistry community grow in the UK and has created an interactive Cardistry map, that can be viewed here. He has also created an instagram to promote all the latest UK events and news @ukcardistry.
Yev is a cardist and magician and did an amazing lecture on how to make a career from playing cards. Whether it's performing on social media or doing live gigs, he gave us an inside scoop on how he has made this a very successful and lucrative career. Paperdecks released its first original deck at the event, the Fades 2023 edition, all attendees got a deck in the goodie bags. We have released 2 editions:
In the afternoon we had a cardistry quiz in teams of 3/4 with some great prizes, including some rare Butterfly deck zeros. The quiz was 4 rounds of 8 questions with the last round being a name the deck picture round.
The winning score was 19/32.
A few examples of the questions asked:
- The term “blue seal” commonly refers to a deck printed where ?
- Who invented/ is attributed to the revolution cut?
- In what year was the first bicycle cards deck printed?
The quiz was followed by a jam session and "teach a move" where we had an iPhone camera displaying on the TV screen and anyone could show off a move or teach it to the rest of us.
Throughout the day we also had a bar open with complimentary teas & coffees, pop up playing card shops and a food hall.
Thank you to all who made Shuffle Up 2023 another successful event and we hope to see you at the next one!
